Every two months, all the musical theatre lovers of Brisbane jump in their cars and make their way to the New Globe Theatre (blasting overrated show tunes the entire drive, of course.) In this underground bar, said musical theatre lovers spend the night chatting, networking, singing, laughing, listening to live music, and laughing some more.
Underground Broadway’s completely sold out Autumn show certainly didn’t fail to deliver.
The open mic section of the night was an incredible opportunity for young performers to sing alongside industry professionals. Gracing the stage were talents from past productions of Wicked, Mary Poppins, Into the Woods, Heathers, Mamma Mia, We Will Rock You!… the impressive list goes on. The Autumn show also showcased five performers from the current Australian tour of My Fair Lady, directed by Julie Andrews and playing now at QPAC.
A selection of the principle cast from Harvest Rain’s Grease: The Arena Spectacular also took to the Underground Broadway stage. As a dancer in the mass ensemble for this production, I was fortunate enough to continue listening to their (and Dami Im’s) breathtaking voices for six shows over the past weekend. As always, the show was about so much more than Grease alone, just as Underground Broadway is much bigger than a simple open-mic night. To experience the heart-warming atmosphere and loving community for yourself, you can buy tickets for the next show here.
As for now, here are a selection of photographs I captured in my role as resident shutterbug for Underground Broadway. ENJOY!
